The National Cancer Institute (NCI) Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events (CTCAE) functions as a standardized system to categorize the severity of adverse events (AE) associated with drug treatment or medical devices. It establishes definitions ranging from mild (grade 1) to death-related events (grade 5) for each AE term. Released on October 6, 2009, CTCAE v4.02 by NCI has become a widely used tool among healthcare providers and researchers to consistently evaluate adverse events.

The Center for Biomedical Informatics (CBMi) at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia has converted the extensive 190+ pages of the CTCAE v4.02 documentation into a user-friendly iPhone application. This innovative application enables healthcare professionals to access the complete CTCAE v4.02 on their iPhone or iPod Touch, facilitating onsite grading during patient visits and providing remote accessibility to the information.

The application encompasses all the established grading standards for the 26 categories of adverse events along with their corresponding event definitions. In addition to the core functionalities, the application presents several advantages compared to the traditional CTCAE v4.02, such as hierarchical navigation of adverse event categories, bookmarking capabilities for quick access to frequently graded events, and a robust search feature spanning names, definitions, and grades.
